Naturalization Brief Overview
There are two (2) ways of becoming a U.S. citizen. The first is by birth and the second is by naturalization.
The requirements for naturalization are generally:
- At least 18 years of age at the time of filing the naturalization application;
- A lawful permanent resident (green card holder) who has continuously resided in the U.S. for at least 5 years (3 years if married to a U.S. citizen);
- Physical presence in the U.S. for at least 30 months of the 5 year period prior to filing the naturalization application (18 months if married to U.S. citizen);
- Good moral character;
- Pass an English exam (tests proficiency in ability to read and write basic English);
- Pads an Civics exam (tests fundamental knowledge of U.S. government and history); and
- Take an oath pledging allegiance to the U.S.
